I attended a training class today at work that really has me thinking. The training was centered around business relationships with people outside our company. The information was well-presented and will be helpful in my job, but I'm just wondering why this kind of training is needed at all.
Why do we have to guard our words and actions so carefully? Why do we have to worry about giving away too much information, about accepting gifts and keeping appropriate relationships with people we do business with? The answer is simple - there are simply too many lawyers looking for work.
It's just sad that we can't have lunch or talk about our business needs or sit in a sales presentation without having to worry about someone taking advantage of us, or putting us in a "legally binding" position and suing our company for breach of contract or copywright infringement or whatever.
When the dollar is king and the bottom line is the final word and everything is acceptable as long as it is legal, right and wrong become very, very grey. And people can't just be people any longer - they have to refer to the rulebook or call a lawyer to know how to answer a simple question.
Just another argument for a real system of morality, based on solid principles, rather than a convoluted system of laws and regulations and structure. Mankind has been trying to build a "better society" for thousands of years, but it just seems that the more we build, the less we live.

Still Alive
OK, so "The Daily Dwiggy" is more like a bi-monthly publication. Guess my life isn't as exciting or news-worthy as I thought.
Are blogs ONLY for people who have a lot to say and/or a lot to show? Would anyone read a blog about work and family and faith and my mostly nerdy hobbies? Probably not. But perhaps I can send these posts to my Facebook page and then everyone will HAVE to read it! Ah ha! My evil scheme is coming together!!!
Now I just need to figure out how to sell something to generate revenue... ;-)

Draining...
Things are starting to clear up (perhaps it's all in my head)...
- My cold is starting to subside a little. Maybe it's just the decongestants I'm taking, but I definitely feel better today.
- I had my first soccer practice last night - in addition to the relatively simple challenges of teaching kids to play soccer, coaching a youth soccer team also requires the ability to wrangle and motivate kids who don't always seem interested in being there. My son actually cried after practice because he was so upset at his teammates and their bad attitudes. But...getting the first practice out of the way is a big step.
- I'm making some progress on planning for this month's activities at church.
Progress is good. One day at a time is also good.
Tonight I having some friends over for singing and stuff and then tomorrow I've got disc golf league. So...I've got that going for me, which is good. :-)

Clogged
Everything in my life right now is clogged -
- My nose and head are clogged with stuff cuz it's getting close to the start of hayfever season and I have very bad allergies in the Fall. Time to schedule an appointment with the allergist and egt some decent meds!
- My schedule is clogged with activities for the next 8 weeks due to soccer season and the start of some new stuff at church:
- My work life is clogged with tasks both new and old (stuff from my current position that I'd like to fnish before I start my new job and start-up tasks for my new position). I'm guessing that there will be a lot of overlap once I officially start my new position (September 8), so this might get better before I gets worse.
- My home life is clogged with commitments (see above) and a desire to do more with my kids and my wife and do more work around the house (not just daily maintenance, but maybe also complete some of the nagging issues that need to get fixed)
Ugh. Maybe it's gonna take more than some better allergy meds to totally un-clog...

Decisions
Lots of decisions need to be made in the next week or so...
PCSL Soccer practices start in one week. I'll be coaching my son's soccer team again, and practices are Monday and Friday from 5-6 PM. Games are every Saturday, at random times. So...considering the length of time for practices and games and the prep for both, my schedule will be getting a LOT tighter for the next 8 weeks.
This Wednesday night, the Fall League starts for our local disc golf club (check out www.bndisc.com for details). I'm very much into disc golf right now, and I really want to keep playing on Wednesdays with the gang, AND I want to continue playing and getting better. BUT, in September, our church is starting a new Wednesday night series about the environment and I'd really like to go to that too.
And...
I start my new job at the very big company on September 8th and I want to really start saving better and making better use of the resources I have available. I balanced our checkbook last night and found that my wife and I went a little overboard last month and I'd really like to prevent that in the future. So, I need to spend some time finding a money management stratgey that works for us.
Suffice it to say...my brain is full. :-p

Semi-daily?
DOH! I really really intended to make this a daily blog...gotta get in the habit!
Today was pretty un-remarkable - a fairly busy day at work (web servers, network hardware and applications break way too much), goofing around with the kids after work, a nap after dinner, and wasting time on the PC after the kids went to bed.
One interesting thing -
My friend Ben Douglas is still doing well at the PDGA World Championships. In fact, after day 4, three guys from Central IL who I know and who play together weekly are in the top 15 in the Advanced divison (the top amateur division)- Dustin Fee (10th), Ben Douglas (11th), and Grant Lonie (15th) - and another one of local boys in not far behind (Nate Yemm (35th). We've also got one of the top Open Masters players - Rob Strasser (28th).
So I guess I shouldn't feel so bad playing in the "lower division" in our league and/or getting smashed by big boys on a weekly basis - we've got some of the best disc golfers on the planet right here in our neck of the woods!!! I'm so proud. :-)

A New Beginning
I was posting a comment on a friend's disc golf blog this morning and I remembered that my Blogger profile is tied to my "Radical worship" blog. That blog has been my primary blog for the last 5 years or so, and has been a great place to record my thoughts on faith and life, but I haven't really been keeping it up to date and I'd really like a more general bucket for my daily thoughts and tasks - a real "web log". So...
The Daily Dwiggy is born!
Today, I'm...
- working at The Farm, juggling a hundred large and small tasks, as usual.
- getting ready for the first of our weekly "Worship Team Devotionals" (more on that later and/or on my Radical Worship blog)
- tracking my friend and co-worker as he competes at the 2008 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships
- preparing to send out a welcome letter to my U10 Boys soccer team (practices start in less than 2 weeks!)
- trying to negotiate a suitable start date for my new position (more on that later...hopefully soon)
